From Fall to Winter: Preparing for the Cold Seasons
Share
As the leaves change and the air cools, autumn is the season of change, which means changes for you and your horse! The season brings crisp mornings, earlier evenings, and winter waiting just around the corner. Taking time now will help you and your horse transition into the colder months ahead.
For your horse, autumn is about balancing comfort and health. As the days grow shorter, their coats grow longer, so consider whether you will clip or leave them natural. If you do plan to clip, be sure to have appropriate blankets ready to keep your horse warm as temperatures drop. When fall comes around, that means vaccinations and other routine care like dental check ups before winter weather.
For riders, this season is a great reminder to swap out summer gear for layers that keep you warm without restricting movement. Breathable base layers, sweaters, and waterproof jackets will make those autumn rides more enjoyable. This is also the perfect time to check your tack and equipment. Leather can dry out from summer sun and dust, so a good clean and condition will help it last through the damp and cold months of winter.
Enjoy the beauty of fall rides and the slower pace that autumn brings. With thoughtful care and preparation, you and your horse will be ready to embrace the winter months ahead.
